How to get there
In the City Market area of Bangalore,
Chandra Bhavan can be found at the main junction (entrance)
of Avenue Road. Well known by most Rickshaw drivers
in the City. 2.5 kms from the train and bus station.
Profile
Chandra Bhavan has been on the same site since 1932.
It’s a family business, three generations in fact with
the grandson Gautam now looking after the place. It
has 37 rooms of different layout, some single, some
double and some four bedded, the majority have attached
bathrooms and colour TVs. There is a 24 check-in availability,
the in-house restaurant, open to non-residents, opens
from 6.30 in the morning until 9.00pm.
Buddy Advantage:
Not at these prices!
Recommendation
This was recommended to me by a young Graphic Designer
and Photographer Yann Razavet from Paris. Yann had been
traveling across India and told me about Chandra Bhavan,
he was insistent I checked the place out, in his words,
very clean and very good value. I went over to City
Market, a little dubious but still, Yann was so impressed
I had to investigate. I met Gautam at the reception
and was bowled over by the enthusiasm and honesty of
this guy. He is very proud of is family connection with
the Hotel and with his two grandfathers sitting in the
corner, it just reminded me of my holidays in Sicily.
Look, it’s not going to cost you a fortune, a single
room with bathroom and TV will cost you 270/- rupees,
YES, TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY Rupees a night!!! You even
get room service! Just incredible. If you are backpacking
or whatever and have to come to Bangalore for connections
or on-route to another destination, check it out, but
it really is best to book in advance, its already in
“Lonely Planet’! The rooms really are excellent value
and the bathroom cleaner than mine, they are obviously
basic, the only thing I would say is that redecoration
may be overdue but Gautham has already told me they
have a regularly decorating schedule.Well worth the
recommendation.
